What People Say About Musical Memories
Christian Wells, Executive Director
Alzheimer’s Association Capital of Texas Chapter
Silverado is a strong believer in music being an integral part of the care we provide. Pat’s one-to-one Musical Memories sessions have been so beneficial for our residents. Not only have our residents been blessed by her lovely singing voice, but they enjoy her sweet soul. Our associates and family members have provided great feedback after her sessions with residents. Silverado Onion Creek is honored to be able to provide this service.

I would like to say how pleased I am that Pat Grigadean has been singing one-on-one to my mom, who has Alzheimer’s. When Pat sings to her, my mom has a look about her of enjoyment and contentment. She often moves with the music with her hands or her body and sometimes will kind of sing along in her own way. I have heard her say at times, “That’s beautiful.” For my family, we really appreciate Pat. It is truly wonderful for my mom to have this gift of music given to her individually. When Pat sings to my mom, it is the best part of her day. With appreciation,

Pat Grigadean makes magical times with her beautiful voice, personal kindness and care for patients who may not be able to join in group activities. Her wide selection of songs bring back memories for my 92 year old husband who often joins her as she sits by his bed and sings his favorite songs. Her insight into his emotional needs is remarkable. She is an amazing person.

Pat’s one-on-one Musical Memories sessions are a valuable addition to the group music programs we offer. She uses old, familiar songs to engage residents with cognitive impairments who I feel can also use more individual activities and be engaged with more happy moments. Her detailed session reports help us track how individual residents are responding, and the feedback from residents and family members has been very positive.

Pat sings with my husband, who has Alzheimer’s. I’m impressed with her lovely singing and with her ability to communicate with Tom compassionately and respectfully despite his shifting moods and mental states. It gives him a way to connect with special memories and engage in an activity he truly enjoys.

One of the heartbreaking aspects of having a loved one in a memory care facility is that we are not able to visit as often as we would like. My 93 year-old friend longs for real connection and conversation, but there are only two of us left to visit her. The facility is understandably limited in their capacity to meet this need.
It is such a comfort to know that Pat comes on a regular basis to spend one-on-one time with her. Pat’s knowledge of dementia, sensitivity, sense of fun and skill at connecting through music brighten her day. Pat brings out my friend’s charm, wit, humor and love of conversation. It’s all still in there – she just needs someone with Pat’s skill to break through the isolation, using the shared memory of music!

I’ve worked with and admired Pat for many years. Her kindness and compassion alone will endear her to older folks like myself. She exudes charm and hospitality and has a delightful sense of humor. Combined with her gift for music, she provides an important and meaningful service and brings joy to the lives of those she touches.

To be respected and acknowledged are eternal human needs. Through Musical Memories, Pat helps restore dignity to people who may feel lost at this stage of their lives through dementia or Alzheimer’s. What a gift!

I’ve known Pat personally for over 30 years. Her warmth, compassion and engaging, lighthearted musical talents bring smiles to the faces of people of all ages. I will refer my family and friends for Pat’s Musical Memories when the situation arises, and hope I could have that gift myself.
